KNESS has received a certificate of compliance with the ancillary services requirements for one of its energy storage system (ESS) projects, which won pursuant to a special auction. This document confirms the technical readiness of the ESS to provide frequency containment reserve (FCR) services based on the results of relevant tests conducted by the transmission system operator. Successful certification is the final stage of the project. KNESS team is currently working on its market integration, which includes full facility management using own Energy Management System (EMS).
It is noteworthy that the certified energy storage system is KNESS’s own technological development, which the RnD team has been working on for several years.
“Four years ago, we began researching and experimenting with various energy storage technologies, actively working on the architecture and configuration of the ESS, and modeling its operating modes in the ancillary services market. As a result, we designed, developed, and manufactured our own technological energy storage solution. And now, based on our Ukrainian ESS, we have built an important energy facility for the stability of Ukraine’s power grid,” notes co-owner and СЕО of KNESS Sergii Shakalov.
Energy storage system by KNESS is unique because it was developed “from a cell”, from a prototype to a complete high-tech solution manufactured by KNESS Group specifically for the Ukrainian ancillary services market.
“The value of our system lies in its technological design and intelligent operating algorithms. All the intellectual components of the ESS are the result of the KNESS RnD team’s efforts. This includes monitoring and control systems for all ESS components: from the lower level — the battery management system and the operation of converters, to the upper level — the control modules for the system nodes. The software we have developed is all about safety, flexibility, and manageability. It is the management system that transforms the energy storage unit into an intelligent energy facility,” adds СЕО of KNESS.
KNESS Group is in the final stages of implementing one of the largest portfolios of energy storage system projects for providing ancillary services to support the stability of the Ukrainian energy system. In addition to the already certified facility based on KNESS’s technological solution, this also involves more than 100 MWh of ESS capacity produced by our partner HiTHIUM. The projects’ implementation is the result of a special auction held by the transmission system operator for the ancillary services procurement. This also serves as an illustration of the effective work and interaction between the system operator and businesses that invest and implement important energy projects in Ukraine, even in wartime.
“Today, ESS is not just about supporting the stability of the energy system; it is a step into the future. It is the key to its transformation and conversion into a more reliable, sustainable, and modern system,” highlighted Sergii Shakalov.
Why are such projects crucial for the country? Ukraine’s energy system must be constantly balanced, i.e., the amount of electricity generated must match consumption. If there is no balance, the frequency in the energy system will deviate from the norm of 50 Hz. How can stability be maintained? One solution is to install energy storage systems (ESS). They respond to changes within split seconds and stabilize the frequency. Meeting reserve requirements is important both for the stable synchronous operation of the European and Ukrainian power systems and for the uninterrupted electricity supply to consumers.
