KNESS and Hithium: partnership to innovate the energy industry

KNESS is actively implementing one of the largest portfolios of energy storage (ESS) projects to ensure the stable operation of Ukraine’s power system.

136 MWh of energy storage capacity manufactured by our partner Hithium is already on its way to Ukraine. These units are intended for eight projects, and the energy infrastructure is currently being built for their further connection. All projects are expected to be completed by October 2025.

Hithium is a leading integrated energy solution provider of top-quality stationary energy storage products for utility-scale as well as commercial and industrial applications. Hithium’s innovations include groundbreaking safety improvements to its lithium-ion and sodium-ion batteries as well as increases in lifecycle. In addition, Hithium has shipped 60+ GWh of BESS products (cells, systems, and others), is consistently rated as a Tier 1 BESS supplier and ranks #3 in the 2024 energy storage battery shipment globally.

Partnership between KNESS and Hithium is about combining expertise and experience in implementing energy innovations.

KNESS team has already completed the relevant training and received partner certificates with the capability to provide services for the setup and maintenance of energy storage systems manufactured by Hithium. We are also currently working on the development of our own Energy Management System (EMS), which will enable efficient management of equipment operation to ensure uninterrupted grid operation in case of changes in consumption and generation. Overall, this will make it possible to provide high-quality ancillary services to stabilize the power system for the transmission system operator. 

Why is the matter of developing ESS projects for the electricity market operation so important today? The power system lacks flexibility and reliability. As the share of solar and wind generation in the balance increases, in the conditions of constant missile attacks on the energy infrastructure, the shortage of power reserves for frequency regulation is growing. And ESS is an auxiliary tool that can solve this problem. Such installations based on LFP technology are characterized by their speed, i.e. they can be activated in seconds to operate in the market, and can be ready to provide services accurately and without interruption, 24/7. Therefore, such installations have significant advantages over conventional generation.

In addition, such decentralized projects will provide conditions for faster restoration of the power system stability at the local levels.
